Abstract

Slotted plates are widely used in the livestock farming industry, mainly for manure treatment in livestock houses, especially in pig farms. Existing slotted plates are mainly made of four materials: plastic, cast iron, cement, and composite materials. Each type of slotted plate has its own advantages. So, considering both usefulness and price, which one offers the highest cost-effectiveness? How should farmers choose?

In modern pig farming, slatted floors laid over manure channels are commonly used to ensure a hygienic and comfortable environment while simplifying cleaning. These floors must be corrosion-resistant, non-deformable, have a moderately non-slip surface, low thermal conductivity, be strong and durable, and have excellent manure drainage, as well as being easy to clean and disinfect. The width of the floor gaps must be designed to fully consider the walking and standing needs of pigs of different ages, ensuring that pig hooves are not trapped.

Currently available on the market, commonly used slatted floors include cement concrete slabs, steel or metal wire mesh floors (such as welded mesh), engineering plastic floors, and cast iron and ceramic floors. Among them, cement concrete slatted floors are most widely used in breeding and gestation houses and in growing-finishing houses. They can be made into slabs or strips, are low in cost and durable, but the manufacturing process requires strict standards, ensuring that the cement grade matches the design.

Cast iron slatted floors

Metal slatted floors can be made by arranging and welding metal strips or weaving them into a mesh. The large proportion of gaps allows manure and urine to fall smoothly, preventing blockages, while also providing good anti-slip properties. This floor design keeps the pen clean and dry, therefore it is widely used in intensive pig farming.

Plastic slatted floors

Plastic slatted floors are made using a molding process with engineering plastics. They are extremely easy to disassemble and install, lightweight, corrosion-resistant, stable and durable. Compared to concrete, metal and stone floors, they are warmer. However, they also have a certain degree of slipperiness, and for heavier pigs, movement may not be stable. Therefore, this type of floor is more suitable for the activity areas of piglets in piglet nurseries or farrowing pens.

Temperature-controlled floors, underfloor heating - hydronic, electric

Temperature-controlled floors use a heat exchanger as a strong frame, and through the pouring of cement-based materials, a flat structure is formed that is both easy to move and transport. The floor also has specially designed inlets and outlets for easy connection to the water supply pipes.

BMC composite slatted floor

BMC composite slatted floors are made by combining unsaturated resin, low shrinkage agents, and other fiber materials with a threaded steel reinforcement frame through a pressing process. This slatted floor is not only high in strength but also effectively protects teats and hooves, while also having many advantages such as water resistance, acid and alkali corrosion resistance, non-aging, and easy cleaning. Its unique design also makes transportation easy and convenient, requiring no crossbeams to easily support the load.
